OOTD: Houndstooth & Leopard RAWR

Angela and I have a great past time...going through Facebook and finding ghetto pics. It really makes the work day go by fast and it brings joy to our lives. We've noticed, so many people are doing impromptu photo shoots. So at work this morning, we decided to have our own mini photo shoot outside of our office.

On Janelle: Scarf: Lane Bryant ~ Blazer: Ashley Stewart ~ Tank: K&G Fashion Superstore ~ Jeans: Lane Bryant T3 ~ Purse: Goodwill

On Angela: Sweater: Lane Bryant ~ Cami: Lane Bryant ~ Skirt: Old Navy ~ Tights: Avenue ~ Boots: Lane Bryant

And for my ghetto pic of the day...naturally a prison pose. It was kinda hard to stand up after this...I need to do some squats!

Curvy Girls Brought It

Photo taken from Nuvo TV
So I'm honestly done with reality television. No really...I want some truly scripted TV. But there is always a piece of me that feeds into my reality TV guilty pleasure. I hope the TV gods are not feeding us big gurls what we want and then dump us once they have our undivided attention, because I'm loving all the big gurl reality love!

The Curvy Girls special preview aired last night on NUVO TV, a station I had no idea existed, but it will be set on my favorites list. I know some people don't have this station, but if you have AT&T UVerse you should...SCORE!

The show followed plus size models Rosie, Denise, Lorna and Victoria as they put their best foot forward working in the strenuous and superficial world of modeling.

Okay so I'm a little bias on my cast favorite...I LOVE ROSIE MERCADO!! Such a beautiful humble woman. I had no idea she had three little ones. I'm so happy to see her success and hope she does well in the modeling industry. I wish there was room in the modeling world for a larger woman especially with her proportions. As a hip heavy chica myself, I understand the plight of finding clothes that fit my child bearing hips and would love to see more women on the scene that has that issue. Ms. Rosie is trying to lose weight to get more modeling gigs and we are behind you lady...every bit!

So there was a part where Rosie had a semi blind date with a person she had been chatting with online. Soon as he came into frame, he just seemed smarmy to me. The guy ended up wooing Rosie on their date, but failed to follow through after with communication and phone calls. I hate men...especially men that say I've never dated a plus size girl before. That means you have a problem with it buddy cause if you didn't her size would have never been an issue. Boo Hiss to you sir...

Denise is the face of every plus size retail store on the market. You've seen her EVERYWHERE. I really don't relate to her character at all and since I don't know her personally, just what I've seen on TV, she seems a bit haughty. I do hope that she works out a schedule with her baby daddy so he can see his daughter. I also didn't understand why he showed up at her apartment looking for her while she was in NY. Did you not tell him you were in NY? What if something happened and no one knew where you were? That seemed kinda weird. I hope my instincts are wrong about her because she is truly a beautiful woman, but from the show last night, she sucks a little. But editing is horrible on these shows...

Victoria, another model, has issues with her "botched" ta-ta job was getting on my nerves about her boobs. She had implants done, but the doctor added a little bit too much. So she was unhappy with the result. Victoria wanted to get her secrets reduced. But honestly, her breast looked natural. They looked awesome to me. Eventually she did get the reduction, hopefully the new girls are to her liking...so she can quit being ta-ta obsessed! If she talked about breast ONE MORE time, I was going to go through the TV and choke her.

Lorna is a curvy model looking for work, so she leaves NY and heads for LA to find her mark on the industry. She leaves her boyfriend behind in NY, but tries to get him to come live in LA. Lorna feels long distance relationships doesn't work. I feel her on that! LDR are hard especially if the parties are not willing to work on it and there is always the whole out of sight out of mind saying. I just hope they had that discussion of work when their relationship was still young. As a model, you do live that fast paced life and that may mean moving where the jobs are. I just hope she didn't lose a good thing. I wish her the best and hope to see her face more.

The one thing I loathe was when the girls got together for a luncheon and another model approached Denise out in public calling her and the other ladies out of their name and making a scene. I HATE THAT!! I hate when women, especially black and brown women, act an ass out in public toward each other. You are not going to like everybody and not everyone will like you...that's life. If you have issues with a person, bring that up with that person PRIVATELY. Not on a public street, in a busy restaurant, in front of that person's friends. I mean ol gurl was loud too. The owner escorted her out. I hate that. It makes it rough for Black and Latina girls who don't act in that manner rise above the stereotype. Don't feed into the hype people.
In all, I really enjoyed Curvy Girls and I hope they bring it back for a full season. Like Big Sexy, it is refreshing to see women on television that look like me and share the same feelings and insecurities. In the meantime, I will just wait until someone offers me a show. But you probably wouldn't want to see me and my friends drink wine by the gallon...or would you?

Weekend Love & OOTD

This weekend was my anniversary celebration. Because our anniversary was during the week and we had the little one, we had to postpone our festivites until the weekend. Jason and I went to our favorite restaurant, Ruth Chris Steak House, and we came home to a nice bottle of Easley's Reggae Blush wine. Thanks to the beautiful staff at Ruth Chris for making our anniversary wonderful!

In front of the basis of our fights for the past few weeks, the Great Camero Caper of 2011!
Yes...and I took pictures of what I wore...WHAT?!?! This is one of my favorite outfits. It's so light and comfortable. Plus the whole outfit cost under $25!! Yeah...no lie!
Cardigan: Cynthia Rowley Marshall's Clearance $9.99 Dress: Norma Kamali Walmart (Online) $12.99 Boots: Old Navy ~ Two seasons ago
Fashion doesn't have to be expensive!

On a side note, today is picture day at Kiran's school. Ugh for picture day...getting her dressed in the morning is like a part time job, now just add tights. So here is her OOTD...

So early in the morning...

The Mother of Miss Image Plus: Otis Rutinel

It is very hard to find a charismatic person who is dynamic and charming. Nevertheless, I have found such a person named Otis Rutinel on the Island. She is an experienced personal image consultant, who offers services internationally; which have a huge impact on the Anglo-American and Latino Market.
Otis Rutinel
As part of her training, Rutinel worked in the pharmaceutical industry and textiles. In this environment, she fully met the concepts of image and the importance it has on business and personal life.

Rutinel founded the Mimisima Corporation focused on building the personal and professional image of their clients. The company offers its services in the United States, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. She is also director and editor of Mimisma La Revista, a magazine recognized in countries such as Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela. This lady is amazing!
Promoting her contest Miss Image Plus on TV
Last week, I got to meet her in person when she invited my daughter Ana to model for a TV Show, because she was promoting her Miss Image Plus Pageant. I went along and had so much fun. She is one of these people you meet and feel you have known forever. I watched how she treated the models making them feel at ease before the show.

Otis is also promoting another event that promises to be great as well which is called Puerto Rico Plus Week 2011. I am so excited about that particular event, because I was asked to cover it for Ruby Leonne! So my friends stay tuned since there are many great curvy things coming our way in Puerto Rico.

Blessings to all,

Marta

OOTD: Anything For You

I never do "outfits of the day" (OOTD), because I usually look somewhat of a hot mess when I go to work. This morning I got some energy, Kiran got up without coercion and I decided to actually dress for work today.

Now excuse my photos, I make Jason take photos of me but he always has an issue with doing it...so I'm usually yelling at him...he's yelling at me and annoyed. So I guess that's why I don't do many OOTDs...LOL!!

Cardigan: Lane Bryant
Tank Top: Torrid
Belt: Torrid
Pants: I haven't the slightest idea...
Shoes: Shoe Carnival

So there you go...I will get better with my OOTDs and find a more willing photographer!

Big Sexy: The New Sex in the City

Yesterday was the season premier of Big Sexy, a new reality TV show featuring five plus size women in the fashion biz living in the Big Apple. Let me first say, I'm really proud of The Learning Channel (TLC) for picking up this show. There is not another show like this on television that promotes beautiful women of all sizes. So kudos!!

TLC's Big Sexy
My favorite person on the show...well persons...are Tiffany and Heather. Heather, a bra and swimsuit designer, because she seems laid back and low key. Though she has some walls that she constructed due to something that's happened in her past. You know how I can tell...she didn't go to the club with the rest of the castmates. She's been through the shunning, the giggles, the hate and doesn't put herself in that situation.

Tiffany, a plus size model, because it's like looking in the mirror. When her ex told her she was a stalker...hahaha...I've done some crazy foolishness like that. But Tiffany's ex said it best..."If your size is a problem for you, then your size is a problem for them." That statement rung bells in my head, and it's so true.

Leslie, a fashion stylist and retail associate at ReDress, is the most confident of the group. She gets it. I'm jealous of her confidence. She's come to terms with herself, her flaws and her beauty. Leslie's embraced it and encourages others to do so. She's the mother of the group...the foundation... the rock.

Audrey gets a WHOOP WHOOP cause she's from Indiana and relocated to NYC to pursue her dream in fashion. The MUA and now model is gorgeous at her 6 foot 3 frame. Jay (who watched it with me last night) was like WOW, she's taller than me. I am happy her mother came to watch her in the fashion show, though I'm not convinced she enjoyed it as much as she said she did. Her face was stone cold as Audrey walked down the runway; almost disapproving. But...you know how things get edited. Yeah...we'll chalk that up to editing.

And last but not least there's Nikki, plus size model. The married but separated model finds love in the arms of an old classmate who is also married but separated. I want to see how that turns out. Escandalo!!

Sooo let me tell you though...when ol gurl (Nikki) pulled out that snack at New York Fashion Week...I was appalled. There is a time and place for everything. I cringed when she pulled out the cookies, crackers, whatever it was...and Leslie wanting to eat a whole chicken. That scene was so stereotypical of a plus size girl...always hungry and got food in her mouth. It makes it seem like she just took it out of her bra and started munching! Time and place chicas...time and place.

BBW...I hate that term. It reminds me of porn. So when the group went to the BBW party...I was mesmerized at the "Thunderthighs" competition. When of of the contestants, Erika (the black woman with the pleather fitting dress not one of the featured women) started popping her booty/fat...my eyes grew 10 times. She needs her own show! LOL

But in all seriousness, the show is a great behind the scenes look at a typical plus size woman; her fears, her outward confidence but inward fight to be strong in a world where big is bad. It focuses on relationships between a plus size woman, family, friends, lovers and haters.

Is it a must see...well I will definitely watch it...but a must see...Meh. If you haven't seen it, you should watch it for yourself. It's on Tuesdays on TLC at 10pm 9 central time.
What do you think of Big Sexy?

Ladies...To The Clearance Racks!

Right now is the BEST time to save money in the fashion world. End of the season clothes are moving to the clearance racks! Start early and create a new wardrobe for next spring/summer for the whole family.
Getting one size bigger for kids is a smart way to go since they're still growing. Ladies swimwear is expensive, you already know you going to the pool or beach next summer, so stock up on a few suits.
Shopping online you can save more, but I like going into the store and checking out deals. This is a great way to shop for future events, gifts for birthdays, graduations, mother/father days, or planning a family trip.
Online stores with killer clearance deals:
Happy Shopping!!

Nobody Leaves This Stage Without Singing the Blues

I had to put that as a title...Adventures in Babysitting is one of my FAVORITE films!!

Yesterday, I got my stuff I bought from Lane Bryant. I was so surprised I got it overnight...that was FAST. I'm ecstatic...I'm down a dress size. I'd like to say a dress size and a half...teetering between a 20-22. BOOM! I'm very happy about the shoes. I have to take them back though. They're too big.

I will have to say, I only bought these shoes because they were on sale. The retail price for them was $69.95. I'm sorry LB, but your shoes are NOT worth 70 bucks! But I got them for $24, so I'll stop complaining.

Also...starting to make some more changes in my diet. I'm trying to transition from a meat based diet to a plant based diet. I will probably NEVER be a vegetarian, maybe like a 80% vegetarian. Baby steps. I did make these zucchini boats last night. Delicious!!! Zucchini, red bell peppers, mushrooms, jack and parmesan cheeses...MMMMM. Brought some for lunch today. I hope they reheat well.

Oh well...going to edit and post the movie reviews later today! You guys have a GREAT weekend!!!

Woes of a Fat Girl

(taken from DenimBlog)
HELP!! So it's that time again to buy new jeans. Why? Some are them are getting too big. (WHOOP WHOOP losing weight WHOOP WHOOP) But most of them are fallen denim soldiers holding my big booty in....they are casualites in the war of rubbing thighs.

Oh why oh why do my thighs rub when I walk...shredding my jeans like an office shredder?!?! Anyone else have this issue? What do you do to prevent this craziness?

Today's Woman Puerto Rico

I was invited to an amazing event called, Today’s Woman Puerto Rico by Tatiana Cordova, a lovely young woman who works for them and Jorge Fusaro, the executive producer of the event.  It was held at the Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This event was intended for the modern woman of today; hard worker, educated, independent, inter-dependent and influential in society, commercial world and home.

Tatiana Cordova
Today's Woman had a full day of workshops to enhance the Puerto Rican woman and develop a full quality of life in happiness, confidence, leadership and determination. This event firmly believes beauty goes beyond physical attributes; as this is the sum of all the features that come with being a woman.

Their mission through this and many future events is Today's Woman  become a movement that has a significant impact on society by enriching the mind, body, soul and spirit of the Puerto Rican woman. At the same time, to promote positive values while helping great social causes and inspiring others to do the same.

Marta with the ladies of Casa Protegida Julia de Burgos
Proceeds went to Susan G. Komen for the cure, for cancer awareness and to Casa Protegida Julia de Burgos, a shelter for battered women. I talked to the ladies. They have a heart of gold and are very dedicated to their cause.

Ana, Daniela Droz & Sara
The master of ceremonies was Daniela Droz. She's an actress, singer and has so many other talents...could this lady work a room! She was energetic, funny and we had a great time with her. There were many workshops there.

Jorge Fusaro with the girls from Cinda's Nails
Lucy Pereda, a well known TV personality, gave a conference. She was promoting her new book. She was amazing a very elegant and classy lady.

They had a conference on cancer issues, sexuality issues, fashion shows and many more. My favorite conference was with Dr. Charmir Highley. She spoke about how your first impression is so important. This lady is great! She had everyone’s attention.

The booths sold makeup, jewelry, clothes and so much more. One of my favorite boutiques was the Parti Boutique. They had great prices and the owner was so sweet. My daughter Ana and niece Sara also loved it.
Plump Couture Fashion Show
I really liked the fashion shows. Plump Couture was the first one out with a plus size clothing show. It was great to see a plus size women fashion show; to be proud of your body no matter what size you are and not be afraid to show it...especially here on the island where plus size modeling is not common at all. Rebeca Tiago had her fashion show. It was lovely as well. To close, the one and only Carlota Alfaro! This lady is fashion designer royalty on the island. Her fashion show “Vintage” was amazing! I had a great time and when they have another event, God willing, I will be there to blog about it again. Congratulations Jorge, the activity was a hit!

He's Speaking to You

At GLY Headquarters with the team (left to right) Vanessa C. Negron, Alexandra Reyes, Paola Vazquez, Irma Santiago, Carmen Sierra & Mariam Mohammadian
GLY Plus Boutique had a press conference on May 24, 2011 to officially announce their online store. With a positive feedback of those present, GLY entered the e-commerce business. I went to the website and found the merchandise to be beautiful and affordable; and with the economy the way it is right now that is a plus. This company is distinctly Puerto Rican; which makes it amazing. As I blogged before, Mariam is the GLY President and a very spiritual person. She put this verse on the website with her interpretation. I just had to share.

Mohammadian & Juanita Sanabra de Zayas (her 99-year-old grandmother)
Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness
and speak tenderly to her.”  Hosea 2:14
God uses difficult times in our lives as a wilderness to attract us to Him. I've noticed when we are in front of a difficult situation with no support behind us, we have no choice but to look up; that's where He wants us. Not the suffering or pain, but total surrender to Him in everything we do.
God speaks to our hearts every time, but sometimes we hear His voice better when we open our hearts in sadness or loneliness. He will pour His love and refresh your soul if you accept it. Surrender your heart to His presence and hear what He has for you.
God loves you and me!

Eileen Guzman of Casiano Communications, Mohammadian & Marlyn Torres VP of Ejecutiva Banco de Desarrollo de Puerto Rico
I loved her interpretation of the verse as it made me think long and hard about life. She has another big surprise about GLY, but she is keeping it a secret for now. You can be sure when she reveals it, I will blog about it right away. Good luck Mariam as you embark on a wonderful adventure!

Blessings to all,

My Interview with Syreeta Rios of Lipstick Killers

A few weeks ago, I discovered a new designer while on Sense of Fashion trying to find a dress for a function I was attending. After seeing her work, I contacted Syreeta Rios of Lipstick Killers and she agreed to do an interview with me for the RL readers.

A model with Lipstick Killers designer, Syreeta Rios.

How long have you been designing?
For close to ten years.

Where are you from?
Originally from Wilmington, Delaware and now reside in Atlanta, Georgia.

Print Romper w/ Sash Retail: $65
How did you come up with the name Lipstick Killers?
My actual company name is Big Gyrl Clothing, Inc. but I wanted to expand my line with more sizes and give it more umph..lol So while I was listening to a song by Ghostface called "Killer Lipstick" talking about women assassins and hustler divas, it inspired me with the name Lipstick Killers. I wanted the line to be different, fierce, punkish, and original so there it goes.

Why plus size? Why couture?
Plus size is where its at baby! I'm a big girl myself and always make my own dresses and there is still such a lack of style and proper definition for plus sizes in major stores so designing for my fellow plus divas will always be something that I will feel passionate about. To be couture is to make custom, made to measure pieces that cost thousands of dollars so I wouldn't say that my collection is couture, but it is my desire to be at that level soon.

What type of woman is a Lipstick Killer?
Lipstick Killers live by their own rules, control their destiny, and fight for everything worth fighting for. We live fearlessly and dress fearlessly. We don't break fashion rules, we create them. We don't live by the trend, we set them. We love hard and work hard just to play even harder. We live a life full of passion, excitement, and fullfillment. Lipstick Killers rock! To read more, please visit my blog post http://www.ustrendy.com/lipstick-killers-collection/blog/.

Tube Top Rhinestone Jumper Retail: $60
What's special about Lipstick Killers?
Its original prints and designs, flowing pieces, tight pieces, unique tees, and some accessories. LKC is where its at for the killer outfit. Its head turning, eye catching garments.

Explain how you construct your pieces?
My pieces are constructed from various patterns and from the heart.

What are your inspirations?
My inspirations come from anything and everywhere. Mainly, I am inspired by different genres of music such as heavy metal, rock, pop, and hip hop.

Do you prefer independent designers or mainstream designers?
I think independent designers are the best! We hustle hard for what we make and go through so much to put our lines out there. There is nothing like exclusivity.

Sexy Striped Spartan Dress Retail: $45

Who are you influences?
I adore Chanel, Dior, and especially Christian Siriano. I also love Kimora Simmons business ethic and style.

What is the average price of your pieces?
On average about $50

What is your favorite piece?
I must honestly say that I do not have a favorite piece, I love them all like children, equally..lol

Do you have any side projects you want to share with our readers?
I am also a journalist for examiner.com as a nightlife expert which you can read my articles at http://www.examiner.com/nightlife-in-atlanta/syreeta-rios and also am working on a men's line.

Thank you Syreeta for sharing Lipstick Killers with our readers! Make sure you become a fan on Facebook.

Plus Size TV Commericals

My husband noticed some commercials that use plus size women spark a lot of controversy. Brands are showing more of the plus size body than the public is used to. Lately a lot of commercials have been banned from daytime television due to being too racy for television; there are certain times these commercial can be aired. I like Lane Bryant's commercial. It shows a woman meeting her boyfriend in her bra, panties and a trench coat. Makes me want to go get a trench coat!
This commercial was banned, but you can see it online.
Serena has a shape men and women fantasize about. She's a great tennis player and has brought fashion to the tennis world. She is comfortable with her muscular curvy frame. Yes...some of Serena's outfits can be questionable (What was she thinking?) I would like her to make a new commercial so her fans and people who look up to her can view her in a positive light.

LOTD & Weekend Love Mash Up: Roc Da Mic Media Day

I don't post a lot of pictures of myself on the blog. You know when I look at my own pictures, I cringe. Not that I don't think I'm gorgeous, I just cringe disbelief...that's what I look like. I can't explain it. AND I can't find my tripod and my fiance is a HORRIBLE photog! I feel left out sometimes...so many blogger routinely do LOTD. I'm going to try!

Anyhoo...it was cold and rainy today, but I felt like putting on a mini. I helped one of our (Aesthetic Design Style) clients sell tickets for his fashion show tomorrow. I thought I looked kinda cute.

Shirt: Old Navy, Denim Skirt: Torrid, Necklace: JCPenney, Shoes: Shoe Carnival
I definitely need to work on some LOTD post. I did score some great clearance buys at K&G Fashion Superstore today!!! I can't wait to get into that stuff....PLUS the goods I got from Torrid on Friday from their 50% clearance sale. My fiance says I have an addiction...no I just can't turn down a good sale!

Make This a Night To Remember

I've been invited to a charity event in May put on by House of 5th, an independent fashion label based here in Indianapolis, IN. They don't sell plus size clothing YET, which is a bit disappointing. BUT speaking with one of their creatives, Audrey Hopper (who is plus size herself), they're looking into this venture. (Lots of independent designers find it hard to transition into the plus market because of cost.) Anyhoo...I'm looking for something to wear...again. I'm wearing my Eliza Parker to the Roc Da Mic Fashion Show on April 17th, so I'm looking for something else.

I went on the Sense of Fashion website and found a plus size designer...DING DING DING! Lipstick Killers has some really AWESOME pieces. The designer, Syreeta Rios, is based out of Atlanta, GA. Sizes go up to a 28. I'm trying to get a hold of Rios to order a few pieces and to get an interview with her. Keep your fingers crossed. In the meantime, here are the pieces I want!

All photos are taken from the Lipstick Killer's Facebook page.

The fabric and the handkerchief cut just seems PERFECT for the spring!

Plump Couture

Yes my friends, women in Puerto Rico love fashion!!

I wanted to tell you about a beautiful boutique called Plump Couture. It's located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. My daughter Ana told me about it. Ana was going to be interviewed for The Imagen Magazine page on Facebook and needed a dress. I contacted Marilyn Arroyo and she was gracious enough to lend one to her. This is why I love Puerto Rico, people you don’t even know will help you.

Their clothes are beautiful, the shoes are incredible and the jewelry to die for. They have a runway in the store that makes their clients feel like super models. Recently they had their inauguration. The store had a casting and chose their models to model their clothes for the press. I loved this idea. So remember if you are ever in Puerto Rico check them out.
